Search is your friend
The best way to find your perfect sound effect is to search for it. Go to the Elements page and use the search bar – be as descriptive as you like.
Learn to love the preview!
Browse through the different sound effects, clicking the play button to preview it. You can use the up and down arrow keys on your keyboard to quickly move through the list.
You can favourite elements you like by using the heart icon. To find them later, toggle the “favourites” button in the Element browser toolbar.
Remember, if it sounds good… it is good!

Layer up for extra punch!
Sometimes you won’t get quite the impact your looking for with a single sound effect, and the trick here is to think of them in layers. You could add a glass smash to an impact boom to make it pop more. Alternatively, sometimes sound can be deceiving: get creative! In early movies, the classic fight “punch” sound was created by hacking a knife into a cabbage!
Sculpt your sound
You shouldn’t always expect the sound effect to be fully complete. There’s a whole world of processing and effects you can add on your sound design journey. Soundly’s fantastic ShapeIt (free!) and PlaceIt plugins are great for giving you some control over sculpting the sound. For more interesting effects, try MNTRA’s BOREALIS reverb, or Polyspectral’s cool MBC compressor.
